Description
A Lionel No. 397 Operating Coal Loader, a post-war era accessory produced for O-gauge model train sets. This motorized unit is designed to lift artificial coal from the receiving bin via a conveyor belt for discharge into train cars. The assembly consists of a gray die-cast metal base, a black painted metal conveyor frame, and a red painted metal receiving bin and chute. The motor housing is made of yellow plastic and features a General Motors GM logo. The conveyor belt is constructed of a flexible rubber or plastic material. The item is accompanied by its original corrugated cardboard box, which bears an orange and blue label reading No. 397 Operating Coal Loader and Lionel Electric Trains. The side of the box is stamped Made in U.S. of America with a Gair Bogota Corp seal and the code 397-44. Accessories include a cloth sack labeled No. 206 Artificial Coal from The Lionel Corp. and a brown paper envelope containing a No. 364C controller, No. 81-32 connecting wires, and a No. 397-49 instruction leaflet.
