Spring Vintage and Modern Train Auction, ALL ABOARD!
Lot 225:
Description
This set of four vintage non-powered model train passenger cars is designed in the style of mid-20th-century European manufacturers such as Martin-Fex. The cars represent the luxury Pullman Salon coaches of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL), historically associated with famous long-distance trains like the Orient Express. Each coach is constructed from painted and lithographed tinplate and is equipped with articulated two-axle trucks and metal wheels. The cars utilize a hook-and-slot style coupling system.
The upper portion of the body features a cream-colored band lithographed with the text COMPAGNIE INTERNATIONALE DES WAGONS-LITS ET DES GRANDS EXPRESS EUROPEENS. The lower sections are finished in dark blue and marked VOITURE SALON to the left and PULLMAN CAR to the right of a central gilt crest. This emblem is the insignia of the CIWL, depicting two lions rampant flanking a shield. The roofs are detailed with molded ventilators and show two distinct finish variations: two cars have dark gray roofs while the other two have a lighter gray finish.
